OPERATION KIDZ KOMFORT-Corporate Information
Board of Directors:
Shannon Smith: Founder/President
Shannon is a cancer survivor who had just weeks to live in 1995. Shannon survived this devastating disease. Her doctor`s state that her recovery is “unknown”. Shannon`s mission in life is to “Gift Hope” to children in medical need. She met Zachary Cove (OKK Co-Founder) who is a cancer survivor when he was 4 years old, both survivors knew it was their mission to help children. As the need grow so did the demand to provide programs and services so they founded Operation Kidz Komfort in 2008. After volunteering for over 10 years Shannon merged her relations with national children`s non profits to assure children`s needs were met. Children need our support and help so they may continue to heal, through research, advocacy, services, and programs that are directed to the wellness of children. Operation Kidz Komfort continues to work with our youth volunteers in their communities as they increase awareness of health for their future peers.
Zachary Cove: Founder
Zachary is a miracle. He is twelve years old and has not had anymore reoccurrences so far, doctors will never give Zachary a remission status. He still must have brain and spinal cord MRI’s every four months.
Zach met Shannon told her how he wants to help sick kidz like him – Operation Kidz Komfort was started just by a statement and a need. We began “Zachary’s Superheroes” as a way to raise awareness of all children’s cancers. EACH YEAR CHILDHOOD CANCERS KILL MORE KIDS THAN ANY OTHER DISEASE INCLUDING ASTHMA, DIABETES, CYSTIC FIBROSIS, CONGENITAL ANOMALIES AND AIDS COMBINED. We are looking forward to seeing all the amazing people from our community become a part of Operation Kidz Komfort.
Zachary was diagnosed two weeks after his fourth birthday on what was supposed to be his fourth birthday party with a malignant Ependyamoma brain tumor the size of two golf balls that was located between the brain stem and the cerebellum. The doctors said that more than likely he had been born with the tumor. Currently, there is no cure for Ependymoma tumors.
Zachary’s tumor was removed the next day and he began undergoing Proton Radiation treatments at Loma Linda University Medical Center five days a week for the entire summer. Two months after completing the Proton treatments the tumor recurred and he underwent another surgery to remove the second tumor. One week later he was hospitalized to undergo, what was then considered to be an experimental treatment, Radiosurgery which is similar to Proton Radiation but is more precisely and extremely higher doses of radiation.
